When to Clean You Air Ducts

Air duct cleaning is an essential process to keep your heating and air conditioning equipment running efficiently and really helps keep your home by cutting down on dust. In fact, One out of six people who suffer from allergies do so because of the direct relationship to the fungi and bacteria in air duct systems according to 'Total Health & Better Health Magazine'. If you suffer from allergies from dust, pollen, pet hair or other allergens - cleaning the ductwork in your home is a must.

When to Clean You Air Ducts

A recent study by Discover Magazine showed an average home with six rooms collects 40 pounds of dust each year. This is collected and circulated by your HVAC equipment through your air ducts. Proper cleaning will help remove all of this dust from your home and prevent it from blowing around.

You cannot argue with the importance of air duct cleaning but when should you do it? This is a popular question most HVAC companies get asked. There are a few main factors you need to consider when scheduling your air duct cleaning:

When do you use your HVAC equipment? For most people you have two periods of the year you do not use your HVAC equipment; spring and fall. Ideally, you want to clean your air ducts after a big season of use right before you use your furnace or air conditioner again. This will allow you to make the biggest impact of your cleaning as your ductwork will have collected the most amount of dust during the winter or summer and you will be able to start the new season with fully clean ducts.

Do you have pets? If you have furry friends living in your home, they will add to the dust in your ductwork. Usually those with pets get their air ducts cleaned out more often than those who don't.

What is your bank account at? This might sound funny to ask but air duct cleaning is not cheap. It does not matter how bad your air ducts need cleaning if you cannot afford to clean them. You can expect to spend $20 per vent and between $25-30 on each air return. A typical home (1750 sq ft) will usually have 12 vents and 3 air returns. At the prices listed above, you should expect to spend $330 to fully clean your duct system. Don't forget you'll want to get your furnace cleaned too in the fall so you don't blow dirt and dust into your clean ducts.

Do you have children? Children are more susceptible to indoor polluted air so if you have kids living in your home you'll want to clean your ducts once a year.

Don't forget to change your furnace filters before and after each season. This will also help your HVAC equipment run more efficient and cut down on the dust in your ductwork.
