When thinking about a heating and air conditioning system, most people just think about the box outside with the big fan on top. However, there are more components than just this involved in heating and cooling your home. The duct work is a critical component in distributing an even temperature throughout the home, and understanding it's function is important.
The hot and cold air that moves through your home is pulled out of the conditioned space inside of your air ducts. Somewhere in your home (possibly in multiple places) is a grate with a filter, known as the return grill. The function of the return is to pull air out of the conditioned space and back into the system. It is then sent down the supply line and into the vents in each room. The suction of the return is so strong (in order to pull all the way down the line) that small particulates are also picked up. Dust, allergens, pet hair and dander will travel the length of the system, often getting stuck in various parts of the ductwork. This is the problem that air duct cleaning attempts to solve.
For homeowners with floor vents may, air duct cleaning is even more necessary to proper AC functioning. Vents are holes in the floor of your house with a small grate covering them. When things are dropped, swept, or pushed across the grate, things can fall into the branch, creating an obstruction to the supply line. Over time the various trash builds up, and air cannot flow as effectively through the vent. Combined with the threat of allergens and other pollutants, homeowners with floor vents should take extra care to clean their ducts regularly.
In addition to blockages, older systems run a major risk of containing mold. In the summer, a poorly insulated system will sweat. If the branches are not properly sealed, the condensation can drip inside and pool. Standing water in an enclosed space creates mold and mildew, which will then be blown into the house. This is especially a problem if the unit breaks down or does not run for an extended period of time.
There are different ways of removing particulates from the ductwork. One is a simple, quick job, and one is a true purification. The first method is to simply take a very powerful vacuum, and run it throughout every inch of metal, grabbing all the loose gunk possible. While this will remove large obstructions and much of the dust, it does nothing for mold and mildew, or other allergens that will not move with a vacuum. True air duct cleaning requires scrubbing and disinfecting everything to remove all trace of pollutants and particulates. Finding a company that will give your ducts this attention is crucial to the proper functioning of your HVAC system.
